Description:
Silk is a strand of braided silk fibrils and is produced from filaments of Bombyx Mori Silkworm. The silk has been treated
to remove natural silk gum and is further dyed with black non-toxic dyes. Silk fulfils all the requirements of the U.S. Pharmacopoeia.
Indications:
ilk is indicated for use in general approximation and /or ligatures of soft tissues, including general closure, cuticular use
and plastic surgery.
Effects:
Silk may cause an acute inflammatory reaction of tissue followed by a slow formation of fibrose connective tissue around the suture. While Silk is not absorbed by the tissue, the progressive degradation of the proteinaceous silk fibre in vivo results in the total loss of the suture's tensile strength within one year.
Contraindications:
On account of the gradual loss of strength, which can occur in vivo within one year, the use of Silk is not recommended when
a permanent retention of tensile strength is required.
